If you have to poop in public toilets, try to use the toilets in hotels. They are usually very clean and comfortable.

[–]telephonecompany 4 points5 points ago

Toilets in the Fullerton are the best! :D

[–]zeng0dnot by choice 3 points4 points ago

Since we're on the topic of washrooms, there are a few in Orchard Central that have bidets / washlets.

Orgasmic.

[–]pars28Got ploblem meh? 0 points1 point ago

Must schedule a visit there for the sole purpose of using the toilets.

[–]gingerbreaduncle 0 points1 point ago

Literally?

[–]zeng0dnot by choice 1 point2 points ago

YMMV

[–]vijjerI love queuing up.[S] 3 points4 points ago

My office building has no check-points, so anyone can use any of the toilets on any of the floors. All clean and well-maintained. :)

Ascendas buildings are the ones to look out for. :)

[–]butilikewaffles 1 point2 points ago

Nothing beats the toilets at ION. God damn, i could sleep in there.

[–]caterincaftw 0 points1 point ago

agreed. also the sanitizing gel, can even sit on the seat!

[–]Dreamwaltzer( ¬_¬) 1 point2 points ago

Also, use the disabled toilets, not only are they more spacious, they tend to be cleaner and usually are not occupied.

Always wipe the seat before you shit, not only does this ensure that you have a clean toilet, it also ensures you have toilet paper

[–]gingerbreaduncle 2 points3 points ago

I don't know about using the disabled toilets man.

[–]vijjerI love queuing up.[S] 0 points1 point ago

I'm sure your note of caution is backed with experience... Do tell... You're among friends. Sort of. ;)

[–]gingerbreaduncle 0 points1 point ago

that episode has been buried deep in the darkest recess of my brain. I will not dredge it out for reddit's benefit.

nah, actually I don't have any stories, it just seems wrong to be using toilets meant for the disabled when I'm fully able bodied.

[–]vijjerI love queuing up.[S] 1 point2 points ago

it just seems wrong to be using toilets meant for the disabled when I'm fully able bodied.

Actually, there was a discussion somewhere on Reddit about One thought that made sense was that the toilets meant for the disabled are not 'reserved' for the disabled. But I guess each one to his moral compass.

[–]gingerbreaduncle 1 point2 points ago

I feel the same way actually, that they are not 'reserved' per se.

It's just that, if I do shit in the disabled toilet, I would constantly wonder if there's anybody in a wheelchair waiting outside for me to finish. That would make me feel stressed which is no good because I need to shit in peace.

[–]vijjerI love queuing up.[S] 0 points1 point ago

Awesome pro-tip. :)

If you want to go view the top of MBS, they charge you a fee. To bypass the fee, just say you're going up to Ku De Ta and you don't want the tour. They let you up for free and Ku De Ta has a great view right at the top. No tour needed. Good tip for when you have visitors.

[–]vijjerI love queuing up.[S] 4 points5 points ago

This works for sure - tell them you want to go to the Ku De Ta bar. That way you don't really need to be dressed up either. :)

They used to have a guard at the sky terrace, but they've given up now. So all you need to do is tell them at Level 1, and then they give you a free pass right at the top. No need to be sequestered in the bar, you can go right up to the railings.

Now if there only were a tip to get to the pool without being a hotel guest. :)

[–]gingerbreaduncle 1 point2 points ago

bring your swimming costume in a bag while on the way up?

[–]vijjerI love queuing up.[S] 2 points3 points ago

Might work if you're a hot chick in a bikini. But otherwise, you need to show proof of residence.

[–]key2 0 points1 point ago

only if it's before 7 I think - after 7 there's a dress code at the bar - not too strict I think it's just no shorts/slippers (sandals for us western folk)

[–]milnivekSingaporean Emeritus 3 points4 points ago

i thought people were ironically misspelling coup d'etat...

[–]vijjerI love queuing up.[S] 0 points1 point ago

Possibly a Singlish adaptation. Can ah?

[–]jordangk 2 points3 points ago

not sure where the name originated, but the original Ku De Ta is in Bali

[–]ketsugiout of town -1 points0 points ago*

Unfortunately that's the actual name of the bar. I don't find it particularly funny either in a country where a great many of the English speakers will not know how to spell "coup d'etat" if they hear it aloud or how to pronounce it if they read it.

This might not be new news for the locals, but for new expats and people joining us:

gothere.sg is your friend. Use it, learn to love it.

Get the iPhone app if you want to support these guys!

[–]SippingMyCoffee 2 points3 points ago

Once, I was at a mrt station and key in a place nearby. The bloody site asked me to walk instead for health purposes without giving me the walking direction. Thank goodness for Google Maps.

[–]vijjerI love queuing up.[S] 1 point2 points ago

Well - there are the exceptions.

Try getting estimated taxi fares including flag-down fares, running fare and peak hour surcharges using Google Maps.

What about estimating door-to-door travel time, including waiting for public transport? :)

Gothere.sg has more pros than its few cons. :)

[–]GhostAceHJheh heh -1 points0 points ago

Since we are on the topic of apps, ShowNearby is also a pretty good one for finding stuff around you like where the nearest ATM is or just shops without finding the directory. (It used to have a bus arrival timings but it no longer works due to lack of update).

[–]vijjerI love queuing up.[S] 0 points1 point ago

Yeah forgot about those life-savers. I recently ran out of petrol and used Locacity SG to get the nearest petrol pump.

[–]ebass 0 points1 point ago

Use queries like these to get directions to places quickly:

534985 to 435983 Boon Keng MRT to Jurong Point

When entering a lift, press door close before you press the floor you want. It'll save you about 1/2 a second every time.

Also: Thieves Market (on Sungei road) has every kind of remote control, and every kind of phone battery if you need a replacement.

[–]vijjerI love queuing up.[S] 2 points3 points ago

If you're in a hurry, do this. Impolite? Maybe. Effective if it works, especially in the skyscrapers in the CBD.

*Who wants to volunteer to test this at lunch time? :) *

[–]m_wallace -1 points0 points ago

This is sorcery.

[–]vijjerI love queuing up.[S] 0 points1 point ago

Are you back after successfully proving the myth, or just commenting?

[–]m_wallace 0 points1 point ago

Tried and I approve this message.

[–]vijjerI love queuing up.[S] 0 points1 point ago

Best way to spot a redditor: People who step out of elevators alone and unruffled during lunch time. ;)

[–]ketsugiout of town 1 point2 points ago

If he's using this trick there's a high chance the redditor will step out of an elevator full of angry and confused people.

[–]numb_and_numberiddroo irbodenoppaa! -1 points0 points ago

tried in suntec (tower 2), didn't work (or may be I did something wrong) :(

[–]gingerbreaduncle -1 points0 points ago

Didn't work for me too :(

[–]xbillybobx -1 points0 points ago

I've tried this before too. Doesn't work.

[–]ultimateslacker 0 points1 point ago

Also a lift-related tip: in many of the newer lifts in the CBD area (and possibly elsewhere, but I've only tried them out in office buildings), pressing an activated floor button twice in quick succession will reset it. Great if you hit the wrong button by mistake.

[–]ebass 0 points1 point ago

Heading right down to pick up my iPhone battery tomorrow!

[–]ebass 5 points6 points ago

In old HDB lifts, hitting 3 buttons or more at once will reset the buttons that are activated.

[–]vijjerI love queuing up.[S] 0 points1 point ago

Tested and proved working in all NUS (uni) elevators and my office building.

[–]gingerbreaduncle 0 points1 point ago

genius!

[–]zeng0dnot by choice 1 point2 points ago

If the lift is already in motion, doing so will stop the lift at the next level.

if you park at Orchard Central, please use the valet on the fourth floor. Otherwise it's parking hell as each floor has limited parking and you can't go up once you entered a floor.

When ordering economy rice at hawker stalls and food courts, even if the person serving you is rushing you, wait until he/she stops taking the food item from the tray onto your plate/packet before stating your next item.

Gets you more food for the same amount of money.

[–]hoobagaderp 1 point2 points ago

Also, asking for an extra bowl of rice at a hawker centre is like 50 cents. Instead of "upsizing" and getting a meager amount more.

[–]ebass 2 points3 points ago

Can't get that HDB ballot you want after repeated tries? You can speed up the entire process by appealing to HDB directly. If you've failed enough times, you can be offered balance flats directly which are already built and ready to move in any time! Some of these flats are built when old HDBs are torn down and offered to the old tenants but with many units leftover. In some other cases, they are left overs from previous BTO exercises (not so great units in these cases) or buyers who gave up their flats before the flats were completed.

Just to add on to OP's library tip, ou can actually extend your library books' loan online. I think the website is http://pl.sg

Also, you could return your books at any other public libraries, not necessarily the one you borrowed it from.

[–]vijjerI love queuing up.[S] 1 point2 points ago

There's an iPhone app as well - renew on the go. Or on the throne. Wherever.

Clicky.

[–]radhumandummyi like rendang 2 points3 points ago*

Not sure if considered a tip but, free entry to Singapore Art Museum every Friday after 6pm.

Also, some other museums offer free entry to students, & NS men. Just present valid ID.

6 weeks book loan trick

off-thread; looks like a silly bug in the programming. :P Seems the developer never bothered to cover these (corner) cases.

  • while roaming around, if your hands get dirty (due to some reason!) and you need to wash them, look around for an Indian restaurant in the vicinity; they have a wash-basin almost always.

  • I happened to see a unisex saloon named 'Snip Avenue' (near Bedok Reservoir road) stating it's 2.80 for a haircut. (against the usual 12 bucks I paid elsewhere; not sure if it's some limited period promotional offer or something. Also, no experience as to how good those folks are)

  • saw an old dude in an HDB do this while hanging the clothes out for drying; four bamboo poles, the middle ones have clothes and the extreme ones have a thick plastic sheet covering the middle set of poles. (clothes don't get wet even when there's none at home and it rains suddenly).

ask_reddipore_LPT:

  • is there a webapp/phone app to track the top-ups done to MRT card? (the ticketing machines list all the transactions and cannot filter out only the top-ups. I feel, a way to track top-ups (and hence expenses) will be useful)

The kind old ladies at the check out desk will do the same 6 week loan for you - so its not a computer system malfunction. Its just a 'secret'. ;)

I work near here, and it seems to be their regular thing. The best time for your 2.80 haircut would be mid-day working day. Weekends have mile long queues.

Any kopitiam will do.

There are quite a few Snip Ave outlets across Singapore. I frequent one near my place. You pay for what you get, value for money if you are getting simple styles like me (high slope, ultra short) - don't expect fantastic services.

I helped add CEPAS (EZ-Link) support to FareBot, which you can use to scan your card if you've got an Android phone with NFC enabled.

Had a colleague with a big appetite who would buy two bowls of noodles at $3 each instead of a $5 bowl. The extra amount you get for one additional dollar is so worth it!

[–]ebass 1 point2 points ago

Getting your vehicle inspected? If you have any non compliant parts, go after 6-7pm to inspection centres with extended operating hours as there will be no LTA officers there to ensure the procedures are done correctly. The last time I went, I got to drive right through from start to end with a ALL PASS.

[–]vijjerI love queuing up.[S] -1 points0 points ago

Thanks for the tip - mine is coming up soon. I have a slight doubt they might get jealous at the awesomeness that is my bike, and try to get me to keep coming back.

The Matrix is on to us. Heh.

[–]a5ph -3 points-2 points ago

Good share!

[–]ebass -1 points0 points ago

When leaving a car park with ERP parking and you can't find a place to top up your cash card (or ...), drive as close as possible to the barrier. Sometimes the scanner is angled wrong and can't scan your vehicle's IU. Hit the intercom button on the machine and let them know the barrier's not opening and the scanner's not working and usually you'll get let out for free.

Eating at MCD's? 2 double cheeseburgers and a drink is probably cheaper, more filling and nutritious than most meals with fries & drinks because the double cheeseburgers are on a $2 value menu.

[–]zeng0dnot by choice 0 points1 point ago

I made this once.

Never again, too filling.

ITT Kiasu!

[–]xbillybobx -3 points-2 points ago

Here's a few moe kiasu tips: 1) When exiting a building and someone has their hands full behind you, don't hold the door open for them. Let it swing shut and hit them. 2) While driving and you see a pedestrian, speed up! It will encourage them to get out of your way more quickly. 3) When boarding the MRT, stand directly in front of the door and shove your way on board before anyone alights. 4) Chope, Chope, Chope! Why let someone who could actually use the table sit down and eat? Your time is more precious! 5) When on a lift and you see someone approaching, close the doors as quickly as possible! Not only will you not have to wait for the person, but you won't have to stop at their floor either!
