Can I drink on NJ transit? (self.newjersey)
submitted 4 months ago by caaptainmontereyjack
Going to New York tonight from Hamilton and I can't find a definitive statement online saying I can. Every time I'm on it I see people drinking, and I heard that it is legal.
Anyone know for sure'?

The unwritten brown paper bag rule is pretty much the standard. Don't make a scene and you will be fine.

You don't even need to have the brown bag. The conductors don't care, and no on duty cops ever board the train unless there is a real problem. I take the train 6-7 times a week round trip from New York, to the second to last stop on the Dover line, and I have never been, or seen anyone be hassled before.

this man speaks the truth. I, however, will just put a similar alcohol in a non-alcohol bottle. Vodka in a water bottle, whiskey in a tea bottle, etc.

Yes, as long as you brown bag it.

As they said in The Wire: The police were tied up, and the courts backed up, with thousands of public drinking charges. Some genius had the idea to take his drink, and slip it into a brown bag. The police and courts were no longer wasting their time with people drinking in public, so they were able to focus on more serious crime, and the people were happy they could have their drinks. It was compromise and an unofficial agreement between police and the people.

A great moment of civic compromise. Always love that speech.

I ride NJT far more often than I'd like to and see plenty of people drinking explicitly. I don't see a need for a brown bag since most of the conductors I've seen are not concerned by it.

stop in at the cafe at the Hamilton station and ask them for a big coffee cup.
Pour alcoholic beverage into this cup and attach lid.
?????
Drunk.

This clip from The Wire pretty much sums it up: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2fV-_eiKxE

Yes you can. Just make sure you throw it away BEFORE you step off the train. Seen people get off with brown bag still in their hand and they get busted by cops as soon as they walk off.
Have fun.

Technically, no.
Actually? Don't be a dick about it and your fine. Sometimes they might give you a hard time about it, but every time I've never had an issue. Wait until they punch your ticket to open it, keep it in a paper bag, and you should be fine.
[–]waterproof 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago
Exactly. Don't be a dick and no one will care.
[–]jackherer 2 points3 points4 points 4 months ago
Fuck yes you can. Why do you think all the train stations sell tallboys? I love gettin saucy on the way to see the Devils.
[–]noooonanJersey Shore -1 points0 points1 point 4 months ago
They sell beer on the Staten Island ferry..

I've seen people drinking from containers on the train with no real hassle. I think its really up to the conductors and weather or not you're being rambunctious.

Revert to your underage college drinking habits: travel mug filled with rum and coke or a tequilla sunrise made right in an OJ bottle.

The White-trash Russian: 1) Drink Yoohoo down to the top of the label 2) Fill bottle rest of the way with Vodka 3) just be inconspicuous with it.

You are allowed to drink it on the train and in the station. My friend and I just recently drank a 12 pack out in the open on our way to a concert in NYC. Happy drinking!
[–]cC2Panda 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
Be careful what part of the stations you are drinking in. Secaucus they are notorious assholes about it. If you carry your beer outside of the partitioned area of bar in the station you will likely get a ticket.
