I work for The Independent - it's a fake. You can type anything into the URL - it's the number at the end that's important.

But when I went to the website and searched for the link, I found this, as well as one that says "Sorry it took me so long to figure this out". So who changes it? I would understand if it was changed on a link that someone sent me, but an average user browsing The Independent's site will still see the fake link. How does that work?
