Just out of curiosity, how do you remember them all? Do you have eidetic memory?

Also...awesome.

[–]_Equinox_ 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was going to say that it isn't necessarily an eidetic memory. I keep one of every beer I have ever tried, and could tell you exactly where I was and what I was doing so long as I can see them.

It becomes harder to remember the experience if I also have to remember the beers, but I could probably name you 90% of the ones I have done without err, though not necessarily in order :)

[–]Spreo_superbus[S] 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I remember them all, I can tell you where I was, and who I was with for most of what I have had. I can also tell you details about what I thought about it, tasting notes, etc. I have never been told that I have an eidetic memory, but perhaps I do.

[–]whoami9 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Does your memory extend to visually acquired information? For instance, could you memorize a whole column from a phone book? Or is it limited to experiences?

[–]Spreo_superbus[S] 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'd say it is limited to experiences. I have an excellent memory of experiences, and often can recall things that nobody else can. I have a fairly good memory all-around, but I can't memorize something that I see in the exact form I saw it (like a column from a phone book)

[–]Okwandu 34 points35 points ago

How many redditors/internet people ask you out/to marry them based on descriptions like, "home brewing, beer nerd, science geek girl" never having met/interacted with you in any way?

[–]Spreo_superbus[S] 1 point2 points ago

A few actually, both here and on Beer Advocate.

[–]Booze-And 2 points3 points ago

Follow up question… no just kidding, that would be creepy.

Have you considered putting your notes into a spreadsheet for mass consumption/comparison?

[–]Spreo_superbus[S] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Haha. I have considered it, but I have to update my spreadsheet first. I am unfortunately super busy, because I just started a PhD program.

[–]Mr4lpaca 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Funny, I just started a PhD program as well and decided to compile <this spreadsheet> last friday night.

It really was fun to add up all my random notes and such, and get some statistics for my beer-drinking habits/preferences.

Good for you! And three cheers for grad school making us more anal!

[–]Ag-E 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yah, that's why I did a spreadsheet from the get-go. Love trying new beers and like to keep track of what I've had. I'm only up to 130 unique beers though.

Also, what PhD are you working towards? Microbiology? :D

[–]Spreo_superbus[S] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ecology and evolutionary biology, specifically genetics and behavioral ecology

[–]Ag-E 0 points1 point ago

Even better.

[–]Chanz 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Very impressive. My roomate and I were keeping a list but let it fall behind and haven't been able to catch up. What would you say your top 5 from that list are, which should obviously be a very easy question to answer.

[–]Spreo_superbus[S] 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I am a scientist, so I collect data on pretty much everything. I have an excel spreadsheet with brewery, abv, style, comments, etc that used to be up-to-date, but my real-life research and starting a PhD program takes up too much time.

My top 5 would have to be Westy 12, Westy 8, Stone Imperial Russian Stout, DFH World Wide Stout, Russian River Salvation, and Pliny the Elder. Not in any specific order, although the Westy 12 is first.

[–]shortyjacobs 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Am I the only person to count six beers in your top 5?

[–]Spreo_superbus[S] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yup. Wow. I was answering that question as I was drinking Great Divide Grand Cru (11%). If I have to take one off the list, it would be Pliny the Elder.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What are you getting your phd in? I only ask because I do a similar thing with food, and I'm doing my phd in CS.

[–]Spreo_superbus[S] 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm studying genetics and behavioral ecology. Nothing to do with beer, sadly, although a fair bit of science academics are beer nerds.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nope, didn't assume that your interest in beer had anything to do with your interest in academia. As I said, I do a similar thing with food, but I have been working on my PhD in computer science (and this part of me frowns on your use of excel for data collection).

[–]Spreo_superbus[S] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Haha it started out very small, so excel seemed ok. I had no idea it would become the beast that it has! I promise, my research data set is not in excel.

[–]adremeaux 2 points3 points ago

Why don't you just rate on a rating site?

[–]Spreo_superbus[S] 1 point2 points ago

I've thought about it. I've posted one review on beer advocate. I'm honestly nervous about it.

No one reads anyone's ratings.

[–]IFeelOstrichSized 1 point2 points ago

Not true! I read the rating by the brothers, and then a few random ones by other members... sometimes.

Blind Pig is a better IPA then Pliny (Also by RR).

[–]fs2k2isfun 3 points4 points ago

Blind Pig is very solid, but I must respectfully disagree.

[–]mmj1085 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I thought I was completely alone in this preference until I began talking to brewers. Apparently brewers as a group, according to a few I met at the ACBF, prefer Blind Pig over Pliny. Given the rankings on beer advocate, I was surprised.

[–]Turboedtwo 1 point2 points ago

I'm working on a trade with someone who can get me RR stuff- I will have to suggest that one to them! Is it a year-round beer, or is it seasonal?

[–]mmj1085 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Year-round, AFAIK. My favorite by them is Consecration.

[–]jpellett251 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I disagree. There are very few IPAs I find interesting enough to drink a few of, but Pliny is one of them. Blind Pig isn't.

Do you consider yourself a beer ticker? I mean, do you actively seek out beer you haven't had so you can mark it off the list? I didn't know there were such people until about a year ago when I saw the beer ticker movie. I didn't really see the point in just counting beers without any other info (like a picture or tasting notes, etc)...

[–]Spreo_superbus[S] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't consider myself a ticker, but I do seek out new beers. Mostly because there are so many great beers to try in the US, and I'd rather try new ones than settle with old ones. I think it is the nature of me being a scientist- I always want to collect new data, and try new things. However, if a bar has a beer I love on tap, along with new ones, I will drink the beer I love. I keep the tasting notes in my head- I write down things that I don't want to forget, but I have a pretty great memory for things. I remember where I had each beer, who I was with, what it tasted like, all the different forms I have had it (on tap, bottle, cask, nitrous, etc).

I also keep a spreadsheet with tasting notes and more details about each time I had the beer, but my research hasn't allowed me to keep up with that lately.

tl;dr: I seek out new beers, but do not consider myself a ticker. I just love trying new things!

[–]cywren2550 0 points1 point ago

I had no idea what you meant by a beer ticker.. so I googled it and found the whole video on Hulu http://www.hulu.com/watch/257255/beertickers-beyond-the-ale

Then I learned I was a ticker..

Extract right now, switching over to all-grain now that I am more experienced

Good for you! I encourage you to go for it. I had about 9 months and almost a dozen batches under my belt, and once I did it and realized how easy it is, I slapped my forehead that I didn't do it sooner.

Once you've brewed between a few and several batches, particularly with steeped specialty grains, it's really no more complicated, just a little more time-consuming. Have some DME on hand in case you miss your target OG, and if you haven't already, stop by /r/Homebrewing sometime!

[–]brystmar 7 points8 points ago

Favorite style? And favorite beer(s) of the style?

I noticed the quality of beer improved dramatically after your return to the USA ~121. Was this a conscious choice (getting sick of lagers), or simply due to availability in England?

What inspired you to keep a log of each beer?

[–]Spreo_superbus[S] 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My favorite style is probably either imperial stout or belgian strong dark/quad. My favorite stout is definitely Stone Imperial Russian, however I am a huge fan of most good stouts (honorable mentions are DFH World Wide Stout, Brooklyn Black Chocolate, Old Rasputin, Left Hand Milk Stout). My favorite belgians are Westy 12 (but since that is so rare, I don't really count it as my favorite since I will probably only have it once), Three Philosophers, St Bernardus 12, and Pretty Little Things Baby Tree.

It was both a conscious choice, and availability. Most of what is available in the pubs in England (I was studying at Cambridge) were bitters, lagers, and ales. I tried what was available to me (essentially if it was there, I tried it). When I got to America, I discovered the wealth of craft brewing, and am very happy!

I was challenged by previous students in my academic program to try 102 different kinds of beer (the previous record holder tried 101). So I kept a list, and tried new things everywhere I went, and had 120 at the end of the program. Then, because I am a compulsive data collector, I kept it up!

[–]brystmar 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Very cool!

You listed some good stouts there, but I have a feeling that list will need revision once you get your hands on brews like Dark Lord, Parabola, The Abyss, or even the Stone 15th Anniversary Black IPA. Go out of your way to find DL, it will change everything!

Also surprised to see Baby Tree ahead of Rochefort 10 on your Belgian list. You should check out Malheur 12 (and 10). Happy beering!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That Black IPA was one of my all-time favorite beers.

[–]Spreo_superbus[S] -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I am a huge fan of Rochefort 10 as well, it just didn't come to mind. I had Baby Tree recently, and was very impressed by how good it was, so it is on my new list of favorites. I have never tried Malheur 12 or 10, I will have to seek it out!

I can't wait to try the monster beers like Parabola and Dark Lord. Now that I am of legal age, I can actually seek them out when they are released and buy them!

[–]ajd6c8 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Parabola is insane. Also try BORIS/DORIS, BCBS (Rare if possible), Angel's Share (apologies if those are already on your list). The next step of course is to massive Barleywines...

[–]Spreo_superbus[S] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Any recommendations on the Barleywine front?

[–]ajd6c8 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well there's Abacus of course (Parabola's sister). Hoppin Frog BBW, Rogue Old Crustacean, SN Bigfoot, Stone Old Guardian, Troegs Flying Mouflan, Weyerbacher Insanity... etc. Most mid-major breweries have a Barleywine. Or at least an Old Ale, which is only marginally different.

[–]Spreo_superbus[S] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've had Bigfoot, Old Crustacean, and Stone Old Guardian (Belgo). I'll have to check out the others. I really like big heavy beers.

[–]ajd6c8 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm with you. Go big or go IPA, that's what I say.

Abacus & BBW are the biggest. Any Barrel-aged beer is going to be big, especially if the style is already huge to begin with. I have a Uinta BW in my cellar but haven't tried it yet. I had Schneider Aventinus Weizen-Eisbock last week and thought it was grand. There are some big Dopplebocks out there too that are worth your time (Celebrator and Troegenator come to mind). Mikkeller has some good (strange) barrel-aged stuff like their Black Hole series.

[–]dbtizzle 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've found Dark Lord to be slightly overrated. That being said, I've only had the 2011 normal version and do have high hopes for the various barrel aged versions

[–]kevlar00 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

We cracked a 2011 Vanilla Bean Brandy Barrel in my homebrew club, easily one of the best beers I've ever experienced.

Edit: In comparison, the regular Dark Lords are much less smooth. I'm hoping that will change with age.

[–]gekkou 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The 2011 and 2010 were quite a bit disappointing for me, but the 2009 was amazingly good.

[–]Raoul_Nukem 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The 2009 fresh had to be one of the top 3 worst stouts I've ever had, a complete one dimensional mess.

I can still feel the soy syrup chocking me... bleh.

[–]gekkou 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Interesting that you say that, since that is my complaint for 10 and 11 (the soy sauce). 09 was definitely hotter and had less depth, but the 10 and 11 have both tasted like soy sauce for me. I was worried it was my cellaring (53 degrees, dark freezer), but the bottles that my dad and brother have share the soy sauce.

Legal for one year, 425 different beers. Damn, well done.

[–]ghettobox 1 point2 points ago

Keep in mind, the drinking age in England isn't the same as it is here so 425 beers isn't as difficult as it may seem

[–]Spreo_superbus[S] 0 points1 point ago

To be honest though, the England beers (and some of the Americans) were before I was 21. I was 20 when I started. My first beer on the list was on January 11th, 2010.

[–]IFeelOstrichSized 1 point2 points ago*

Wow, you have good taste in beer. I love stouts, especially those of the Russian Imperial variety.

Out of the beers you listed I love Old Rasputin, Left Hand Milk Stout, and Three Philosophers.

I'm curious, have you(or any other folks out there) ever tried any of these?:

Dragon's Milk

Southern Tier's Javuh or Choklat

Mendocinto Imperial Stout

Left Hand's Wake up the Dead Imperial Stout

Gulden Draak

Ommengang's Chocolate Indulgence Stout

EKU28

The Sixth Glass

Duvel

La Chouffe

Also, I got to try Old Rasputin's anniversary stout at a beer festival. It was delicious.

Do you (or anyone else) have any recommendations based on that stuff?

[–]Spreo_superbus[S] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Dragon's Milk is WONDERFUL. If that is on tap, I don't care what else is- I drink it. I had it nitrous pour once. Changed my life. I've also had Duvel and La Chouffe.

You should try an Imperial Russian stout like Stone's. I can't speak highly enough about that beer.

Absolutely terrible. edit: I did have it on tap with blueberries floating in it though, which really saved the beer. I was entertained and distracted by watching the berries float up and down in the glass, so I was able to finish the pint.

[–]JimmyHavok 0 points1 point ago

It reminded me a lot of cough syrup. I picked up a singleton at Whole Foods just to try it out, and perhaps with some fresh blueberries I could have choked it down, but I was forced to waste beer.

We have a board game day at a friend's house once a month, and new beers are a feature. Somebody actually brought a six of Wild Blue...only one bottle got opened. I don't understand who buys the stuff.

Almost missed the qualifier "mostly" when your first "American craft brew" was La Trappe. You may proceed.

BTW, how did you not manage to lose your same pen through that whole time?

[–]Spreo_superbus[S] -1 points0 points ago

It is my favorite kind of pen, so I have a bunch. In England, I had a specific pen that I kept in my purse, but I eventually lost it. Just a basic papermate blue pen. :)

But seriously though, this is awesome! How did you get started doing it? Also, what are you studying for your PhD?

[–]Spreo_superbus[S] 1 point2 points ago

My best friend is a single 23 y/o female that loves beer as much as I do, and she kept a list with me for awhile! There are others out there, just look!

I started in England, when I studied at Cambridge. I was challenged by previous people in the program to try 102 different beers (the previous record-holder tried 101). I became a bit obsessed with the data-collecting aspect, and kind of went nuts. I had tried 120 at the end of the program. Then, when I discovered the wonderful world of American craft beers, it just fueled the obsession.

I'm doing a PhD studying genetics and behavioral ecology.

This is actually the third version of the book. I started off with a TINY thin moleskin notebook, and realized I was going to run out of room. I copied it into a bigger notebook, and then I decided to buy a nice moleskin to keep it in. I saved both the previous versions of course, and you can DEFINITELY see where the end of my night was. Recently, I have been jotting down beers in my phone, then writing them into my book. The only evidence of drunkenness is typos. :)

Noticed you made the trip to Goose Island and Three Floyds, you from around Chicago? I live in NW Indiana, two towns away from 3F, and think that the area, say around Lake Michigan, has a fair amount of (surprisingly) decent breweries.

[–]Spreo_superbus[S] 2 points3 points ago

I agree! I wish I could have gone to a few more breweries (especially New Holland), but I was strapped for time. I'm actually from Columbus, OH, but was running a race in MI when I made the tours. I moved to NYC recently though, so now I have a new set of breweries to tour!

[–]Spreo_superbus[S] 1 point2 points ago

I really liked it. I have been meaning to pick up more, but it is VERY expensive in NYC ($16!). I had two, and it knocked me on my ass though, being at 12% (I don't consider myself a lightweight, but I am a fairly light girl!). I could really taste the alcohol in it, which I usually am not a fan of, but this beer really made it work. It is one of my favorite DFH beers.

[–]sudo_cmd 0 points1 point ago

Yeah I used to live on Long Island and work in NYC it's definitely expensive there. Sadly, I haven't seen Palo Santo Marron here in New Hampshire.

My favorite Dogfish Head beer is Burton Baton. It's their 90 Minute IPA blended with an English Ale aged in oak barrels. Mmmm.

Also, if you're looking for a few more Irish beers to try, I would recommend Galway Hooker, Metalman, Headless Dog, O'Hara's Stout and Black Rock Stout. There are plenty of others of course, but those are the ones that jump off the top of my head.

I liked it. I had it on tap and in bottle. Apparently it is hard to find on tap (at least in Ohio). I'm always looking for more Irish beers to try. I'm Irish (in the American sense of 'I had relatives from hundreds of years ago that lived in Ireland'). Thanks for the suggestions!

I'm the same way.

TIL you can have 425 different beers and not have tried any beer from Maine. You should though. Allagash, Gearys, Sebago, Grittys and Shipyard. That is about 50+ more beers you can add to your list!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's quite a list, and I'm glad to see so many familiar names. I counted just under 100 that we've "shared", and if I were keeping my own list I'd probably have 200 more - but I've had a bit more time to fill out that list. Great work, and good luck with the next 400+!

I might have skimmed past it, but I didn't see a single Bud, Miller, Coors, or PBR-like beer on there, no "unknown Solo cup from the Beta Theta keg" listing or fake import Heineken, Harp, or Bass, not even a respectable small US-regional brewer like Yeungling or Leinenkugel.

Most people encounter non-nerd beer occasions at some point in their lives (lame parties, ballgames, restaurants), and faced with the unthinkable option of having no beer at all (gasp!) they'll raise a glass or six of whatever is on hand.

How is it that you've missed many of the more pedestrian (i.e., crap) beers?

Given that you seem to have avoided fouling your palate so far, I'd be really interested to know what your second or third choice beer would be at, say, TGIF or Ruby Tuesday's - assuming they're out of the token craft-like brew (Sam Adams, usually), what would you drink?

[–]Spreo_superbus[S] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I had a few BMC beers in college before I started a list. Pretty much just bud lite and natty. Nothing memorable. I haven't had them since starting my list. Heineken is on the list, and I have had Harp, Bass, and Yeungling at tastings. I have had Leinenkugel Fireside Nut Brown (which I was not a fan of), and I have had the Summer Shandy at a tasting.

I'd probably order a margarita! Haha but in all seriousness, if a place doesn't' have anything other than BMC, I will either drink soda or order a mixed drink.

I spent a lot of time looking for DFH World Wide Stout, and then came across it at a local store that does growler fills. I was ecstatic. Now that I am old enough to buy new and limited releases, I have a few beers that I really want to try. Pretty much the basics like Dark Lord, CBS, Parabola, Pliny the Younger, DFH 120 mn, etc. I figure I'll get to them- I started super young, so I have many years to hunt!

[–]DeliciousSoma 0 points1 point ago

If you're into Russian Imperial Stouts that you're going to love Dark Lord. This year's brew was fantastic. Hopefully you get to try it someday.

Gah. I didn't realize world wide stout was that hard to find. I feel silly for not picking it up when I saw like 40 of them in singles when I was in MD.

It depends on where you are. You can't get it in Ohio because of the high ABV.

You just reminded me that I miss Staropramen.

Sad.

Great list though! I was a little sad to see you didn't get to try Doom Bar while in the UK, I loved it.

[–]bunburya 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Staropramen is delicious; if you are interested in Czech beer, I would recommend Gambrinus. Probably the hardest of the 3 main Czech beers to find outside of the country, but well worth it if you come across it. It's quite light, not very bitter, but still quite flavourful.

Apologies if you're a Czech native and this is entirely superfluous ;)

[–]withstereosound 0 points1 point ago

US native who spent a semester in the UK.

I haven't touched Guinness since I got back, I don't want to spoil my memories.

I'll keep an eye out for more Czech beers here in the states!

Never tried it, but I aspire to go back to Cambridge after my PhD (possibly for a post-doc), so I'll keep an eye open!

It's crazy to see how many US beers there are, I'm still happy to be in the Netherlands/close to Belgium though. Ok the AMA part:

  • A test for your memory on two similar beers I'm quite familiar with: Amstel and Grolsch, tell me the differences and which you liked best :)

  • What is your favorite dubbel so far? I recently discovered a place just a 3min walk from me that has Westmalle Dubbel on tap, it's my favorite so far, except for the westy 8 but that was a one time thing probably.

  • How did you like the Duchesse? I was really surprised by it, I don't like all sours but this one I really enjoyed, could be because it was a hot day.

PS: How dare you call Desperados a beer :P Well I guess it's technically a beer, I'm just biased cause I have some supressed memories involving Desperados as a teenager.

[–]Spreo_superbus[S] 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Grolsch tasted very skunky to me.... It didn't have as much of a skunk flavor when I had it on tap, but bottled, MAN. Probably because of the green bottles. I had Amstel in Spain during a HUGE festival. I drank it from a can, on a hot day, walking around town. It was very refreshing at the time, but I'm not sure if I can tell you a ton of tasting notes. That is the only time I had it. From my memory, it pretty much just tasted like cold. It was very carbonated, and had almost a pilsner-feel.

Westmalle Dubbel was fantastic. Westy is great, but yeah, one time thing. If I had to pick a favorite dubbel, it would probably be Westmalle, although I am a huge fan of Ommegang Abbey Ale. I want to make a trip up to Ommegang, I love pretty much everything they put out.

Duchesse was my first real "sour" beer. I really liked it, but was initially shocked by the vinegar-like smell and taste. I love vinegar and sour things though, so I really liked it. I'm trying to expand my sour repertoire.

If you have an iPad, the Bento software is fairly cheap (I think $5), so you can import your thoughts, the list, and a label for each of the beers for a nice database of it. I have done this and it is pretty cool to be able to flip back through and see what I thought of things a few years ago.

Being from Ohio (I'm originally from Cleveland area.) what's your favorite "home grown" brewery from the state? A lot of awesome ones: Great Lakes, Hoppin' Frog, Thirsty Dog, Jackie O's, and the list could go on for a while.

[–]Spreo_superbus[S] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'd say Great Lakes is my favorite. But Hoppin' Frog is REALLY growing on me lately. The pumpkin ale was fantastic. CBC also always has a warm place in my heart, and their IPA is great.

Back in Ohio, it was Sierra Nevada and Great Lakes (as cheap as 7.99 a 6/pack). Now, I am in NYC. I'm brewing my own beer to cut down on beer costs, and buying beer from Trader Joe's occasionally (gasp, I know! But it is fairly decent). Also, Brooklyn Brewery is fairly affordable where.

What is your opinion on macro brews? Any particular that stand out?

[–]Spreo_superbus[S] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Depends on what is considered "macro". Like is Goose Island a macro now? I like macros that make good quality beer. I have a decent amount of respect for Sam Adams. I feel like it is a GREAT way to get into beer.

[–]zillah1985 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What I consider macro, is what is usually shunned by the beer world. You know, the stuff that the huge breweries pump out and is not limited to domestics: Budweiser, Coors, Stella Artois, Heineken, Guiness, etc...

[–]Spreo_superbus[S] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Eh, some of it I will drink if there is nothing else (Guinness, Stella, etc). I pretty much stay far away from Bud and Coors. Haven't had them since a few ill-fated frat parties my freshman year in college.

Hey, I know you :)

I see you've had the Stone Oaked Arrogant Bastard. I've been wanting to try that! Know of anywhere in Columbus that sells the stuff so I can try it?

Can you name any beers that taste similar to Stone Arrogant Bastard?

Favorite Oktoberfest-style beer? So far, I've had CBC, Great Lakes, Sam Adams, Dogfish Head, and one from Germany...the name eludes me (it was a bit different than what I was expecting).

[–]Spreo_superbus[S] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hey you! :-p Go to World Market at Polaris. They had it a few months ago. As far as Arrogant Bastard, I'd try other American Strong ales. The other "Bastards" are my favorite (Double bastard, lucky bastard). Here is a list from Beer Advocate: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/style/78 I like Brooklyn Oktoberfest, but I haven't had CBC or Great Lakes (or Dogfish Head, actually).

[–]Duraz0rz[!] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Great Lakes Nosferatu is on that list? I didn't care much for it if I remember right. I think I have a bottle left in my fridge...I'll have to make sure. I'll stop by World Market after work...I don't work too far from Polaris. Hopefully they have a bottle! And I really want to try the Double Bastard, now that I know it exists.

Dogfish Head has what they call Punkin Ale, which is technically a brown ale with hints of pumpkin and brown sugar, so it was probably my mistake in calling it an Oktoberfest-style beer. I think I tend to lump all of the fall seasonals into the same category :P

How did your Belgian strong dark ale turn out? Barley's had their Belgian Strong Dark Ale - Infinity at Microbrew Fest a few weeks ago, and I had more than a few samples of it! It was pretty damn good!

[–]Spreo_superbus[S] 0 points1 point ago

I never tried Nosferatu. DFH Punkin is fantastic, I love it. I had it on tap, and fell in love! IF you like the pumpkin flavor, try Southern Tier's Pumking. It will change your life.

I am waiting for the Belgian Strong Dark to carbonate in the bottle now. I tried some the other day before bottling, and it already had a great flavor. I have high hopes for this one!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to learn how to love beer? Where in the beerosphere should they begin?

[–]Spreo_superbus[S] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Start slow. Find styles of beer that you like in craft beer (like, if you LOVE bud lite, try a "craft" pilsner like Sam Adams Noble Pils, and then Left Hand Polestar, etc). Then gradually branch out. Try a flight of beer at a bar, or mix a six at the beer store. You will quickly learn what you like and what you don't, but remember to go back to some because your tastes change.

[–]dlm 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There aren't many women with a deep appreciation for beer. Why do you think that is?

[–]Spreo_superbus[S] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't want to generalize, but the reason most of the females that I know don't like beer is because they have never tried good beer, and all of their friends drink mixed drinks/wine and encourage them to do so. Guys encourage each other to drink beer. My (female) friends that have tried good beer like it, and the nerds like me get really into it.

I keep an updated cellar inventory with info on ABV, purchase date, style, etc. I find it to be very tedious even though it only hovers around 100 bottles. I couldn't imagine logging every (unique) beer I've ever consumed. You must be one meticulous woman.

That is a very sad story. Nobody told me they existed until my very last week in Cambridge! I was able to go once and it was absolutely fantastic. That is where I had Dew Drop aka 3.1. I plan to go back to Cambridge for a post doc, and I can guarantee you that will be my regular bar.

Also check out The Mitre, The Tivoli (newish Wetherspoons), Maypole (pricey), and Carlton Arms.:)

I've been to the mitre. I lived in Downing College so the Regal Wetherspoons was right around the corner!
