Amnesia is the name of a brewery in Portland!

Funny story. My aunt knows the owners of Great Lakes brewing company - they were next door neighbors. She said that after a power outage, a few neighbors gathered at the GL owners house and he was passing pints of a stout. He later named it blackout stout.

Upvote for Great Lakes. One of the best things about NE Ohio.

Yeah, more like Black Out Sunday! Started with a SN Torpedo clone, and then switched to a 10% Belgium Belgian ;-). It gets fuzzy after that.

I consider myself lucky if I don't wake up actually inside my fermentor after a brewing session, so your session sounds like it went just fine.

I'm usually too focused to drink heavily when brewing. I get running around and messing with equipment and I'll often forget I've got a beer handy. In general though, I'm well aware of what can happen on an empty stomach. Glad everything seems to have turned out okay.

Will find out for sure in a few weeks, the last thing I clearly remember is the boil. Everything looks clean, but I honestly don't remember sanitizing, chilling, aeration, yeast pitch, etc...

It's pretty unlikely that you didnt do those things if you've been brewing for a decent amount of time.

I nearly burned down the house when we all passed out in the middle of a boil. I had set a 1 hour alarm to wake up and check it at the end and do the final hops. Woke up 4 hours later to a house full of acrid white smoke that smelled like the worst burned marshmallows ever, the aluminum from the base of the pot melted into my stove, and one giant chunk of smoldering hard black carbon/sugar mass

Took weeks for the smell to go away

I sometimes feel like I have more batches go this way than not. The only brew days where I'm sober are either the ones I brew alone (maybe 1/10 tops?) or if we got wasted the previous night and are too hungover to drink anymore.

i think ive had one sober brew day, i ended up making a horrible stout cause i overanalyzed it and thought i should add all these awesome additions at the time. i realized drunk + autopilot = damn good beer for me... so far, lol.

Another reason why brewing should be a group activity. Usually, a drunk group provides enough checks and balances to make sure that everything goes according to plan.

Couldn't imagine brewing alone ever again. Not after the first time...

Then again, I'm an all grain man, so I suppose an extract brew could be done solo. They seem so simple to me now.

I'm not gonna lie, this has happened a few times to me.... I think it says something about your brew skills if you can finish your steps properly while blacked out..... Be careful though.... I haven't yet ruined a batch, but I can only imagine how heartbreaking it is.

I dont start drinking till I get a rolling boil.. that way Im not so completely buzzed I dont feel like cleaning up

This is why you need to have a broke ass college student as a brother / partner. Sure, he knows what he's doing and he's a valuable member of the process, but since his broke ass didn't pay for any of it, he gets to do most of the cleaning.

I had a similar experience this weekend bottling. We were way short on our bottle supply, so we had to go get a Great Lakes sample pack and slam beers to meet our quota. We were literally calling people asking them to come help us drink beer.

Ive done this before, alot actually. Thankfully I write EVERYTHING down, and update my recipe on my computer throughout the process. Ive woken up to read things such as "added 2 tsp of cinnamon, now it smells like pure cinnamon, bad fucking call you surly bastard." It did however turn out great.

Last time I did this was during a double batch, 2 5 gallons in a row. I started drinking when I put the chiller in on the 1st one. Needless to say, I had some healthy starters for both and woke up to beer on the ceiling and krausen all over the floor. The beers turned out just fine.

Too much on brew day leads to bad decisions.

Over the summer I did a light, zesty summer ale that was meant to be made with lemon. Discovered at the very end of brew day that the lemon I thought I had was gone. Rats!

But instead of just accepting that I was now making a light pale ale that would still be great for the summer, I scoured the fridge in search of something to replace the lemon. Figured I could be creative - which is dangerous when you've had a few. Found a bottle of key lime juice.

Which, I came to find out, is nothing at all like lime juice.

But in it went, without thinking it through or checking on the ingredient.

Let's just say that my best beer was not the result.

And that my friends, is how Bud Light Lime was invented.

[–]Shoegaze99 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Believe me, I'd have been just fine with it being a light beer with lime. Something light and refreshing and good for hot summer days is what I was after. I'd probably even have been fine with a Bud Light Lime clone! At least it would go down easy and please a crowd.

Key lime is different than your standard lime. And for beer, it's gross. Just disgusting.

I once made a Key Lime Lambic that I still shudder to think about. Floor cleaner with a hint of turpentine.

[–]besvr 0 points1 point ago

Something like that sounds more like it belongs as an ingredient in wine or maybe a mead. But I've never tried it. Has anyone had any luck brewing with key limes?

I learned that lesson on my first double batch. I was quite inebriated and decided to add some brown sugar to my fermenter on one of my beers because the gravity was "too low". Ended up adding too much sugar and having to put a blow off tube on a fermenting bucket. It ended up almost undrinkable. I slowly have been getting rid of it through forcing myself to drink it or giving it away. I had one of the lips of faith beers as my third or fourth beer. It was between the 2 batches. At 10% and not tasting like 10% it knocked me on my ass pretty quick.

[–]EnragedAlbinoYak 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I did that once, only with corn sugar as opposed to brown sugar and the beer turned out okay cold, but when drank warm (was supposed to be one of those ales) it tasted like rubbing alcohol. Not what I was going for.

Was a little over zealous dumping iodophor out of my six and a half gallon carboy and it crumbled in my hands taking 6 of my fingertips with it. Good thing fingerprints are overrated! Take care with scalding liquids, large glass containers and (for heavens sake) beer-to-be my fellow human beings.

hahahahaahaahahaha i fucked up soooooo many batches because i got wasted while waiting for the water to boil!!!!!!!

[–]BarkingLeopard 0 points1 point ago

I limit myself to 1 beer during the mash and 1 during the boil, as that's my normal drinking pace in any event.

The best part for me is running around like a mad man once the boil is over, trying to get everything finished and put away. Then I walk my sweaty ass down to my local 24 hour convenience store and stand in their walk-in BMC cooler until the 32 degree air cools me down. On the way home from that, I walk up to "the dock" (my local beer bar has a section that faces the sidewalk and sells bottled beer to go) and buy a few beers I haven't had before, then shower and sip those.
