Number 1 and 2 on my list of best shows ever: The Wire and Breaking Bad.

Holy shit! For YEARS I've seen people comparing The Wire to Breaking Bad, and I always had this indignant "WTF ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT!" But I JUST realized this very second that The Wire is not The Shield and found out that The Wire is a show on HBO.

Mind = blown. I'll be checking it out for sure now.

[–]skabossphil 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Season 1 is good, season 2 is alright, moves over to corruption on the docks and then seasons 3 and 4 are freaking incredible and season 5 finishes off being a bit crazy but is very interesting in tying all of the material together. Oh and Omar is by far one of my favorite characters in a series ever.

[–]faceless323 11 points12 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree. I think Season 2 is the weakest season. Season 3 and 4 are incredible. Marlo, Chris, and Snoop.

[–]jud34 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I had a hard time getting into Season 2 when it first premiered. So many new characters, etc. As it gets going, though, it ends up being as good as the other excellent seasons.

[–]faceless323 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Frank took a while to grow on me but by the end I thought he was a great character just like Nick. Ziggy on the other hand was annoying the entire season. but that's just my opinion.

[–]Pfmohr2 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Fucking Ziggy.

[–]faceless323 5 points6 points ago

The fact that he annoyed me proves the guy was a good enough actor. I'd still probably punch him though.

[–]Pfmohr2 5 points6 points ago

Seen Generation Kill? He's more likeable, but still very "Ziggy."

[–]DastardlyBarnacle 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Season 2 was actually my favorite. Frank Sobotka was one of the most interesting characters in the series, IMO. I can see how people may not have liked it as much, but let's be honest...the "weakest season" of The Wire is like the least attractive contestant in the Miss America pageant.

[–]JeanVanDeVelde 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Season 1's my favorite just because everything was so new and the discovery of it all blew my mind. Just re-watched a few of the episodes last night actually. 4's a close second just because it's the absolute truth as to why things are so fucked up in the inner city drug culture.

But they're all good. It's the Dickensian aspect of it that makes it great.

[–]ggggbabybabybaby 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I actually really love season 2. It was really jarring and it pissed me off initially to be wasting time with all these white people when I really wanted to know about the Barksdale crew but watching it the second time around, I realized I missed the Sobotkas and Beattie.

I honestly think the weakest is Season 5. It's still a great season and there were some pretty crucial character plot points but the overarching plot was kind of absurd.

[–]dimlightbulb 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

"The Corner" is also an excellent watch if you enjoyed The Wire. It's a story as told from the drug victims/"abusers" point of view.

Many of the characters from this show later appear in prominent roles in The Wire. The show was produced by HBO and can downloaded from a bay where they may be pirates.

[–]bh28630 19 points20 points ago

After The Wire...

  • Deadwood, Six Feet Under, Carnivale, Sopranos, Dexter and Rome
  • Boston Legal is in its own world
  • Boardwalk Empire has very good possibilities
  • Missed Mad Men and Breaking Bad so now I have something to watch for a few nights.

[–]leedguitars 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, I would definitely recommend Deadwood. Although it ends a little crappy in my opinion. But man the acting is awesome, the scripts awesome, the sets....

[–]bh28630 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Deadwood's abrupt ending was due to the decision to kill the show. Carnivale suffered a similar unforeseen fate.

Six Feet Under created the most extraordinary and fulfilling conclusion to any dramatic series I've ever seen.

[–]HeyLookItsMe22 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The Tudors is another excellent historical drama, ala Rome, albeit in a setting that deals with King Henry the VIII and the politics and drama that surrounds him in England, rather than Ceaser and Augustus in Rome.

[–]TheJeff 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I can't upvote Carnivale enough, that was just an amazing journey.

The other one I just finished and loved was the Tudors. Historical accuracy is only so-so, but once you start watching you can't stop.

I'm at the beginning of season 4 right now, and I'm obsessed with this show. I'm torn between watching nonstop and wanting to take a break to put off the inevitable end of the series.

[–]ggggbabybabybaby 2 points3 points ago

Watch it non-stop. Revisit it a few months later when everything isn't so fresh in your mind. There's plenty of details and foreshadowing to pick up on the second time around.

For instance, I never noticed Deputy Commissioner Rawls in the bar in Season 3. Hilarious little throwaway.

Dramas, solid all the way through:

  • Mad Men is a fantastic drama focusing on characters working in advertising during the 1960s, and it's from AMC - the same network as Breaking Bad. Don Draper is a pretty iconic character at this point. Cigarette, anyone?

  • The Walking Dead is a phenomenal new drama from AMC, and deals with zombies in the most paced and realistic way I've seen since 28 Days Later. Great acting, intriguing plot, and tons of film grade zombie headshots. Mind blowing.

  • Carnivàle is my personal favorite show, and although at first glance many mistake it for merely a show about carnies, it actually has one of the most extensive, deep overarching mythologies I've encountered since Lost. Tragically, it wasn't renewed for a 3rd season, and thus the yet untold story from would-be seasons 3-6 remains a mystery. Worth it.

  • Six Feet Under is a character show like no fucking other, and changed my life, as I'm sure it did many others' lives. The final episode of the series strikes an emotional chord that'll ring true for what seems like an eternity, and the show's primary focus is on a funeral home-owning family and their daily dealings with the dead. Top notch.

  • The Wire is another formidable HBO drama, and arguably the best and truest cop drama in existence. Five seasons focusing on five different aspects of Baltimore city, each as badass as the last. Sheeee-iiiiiiiit.

  • The Sopranos I haven't actually finished, but its acclaim speaks volumes for the show, and the 3 seasons I have seen are nothing short of cinema quality mob dramas. Tony Soprano is the balls, even if he does need a shrink to help him cope with the stresses of taking over the "family business." Don't fuggedaboutit.

  • Deadwood is home to a man even Tony Soprano wouldn't fuck with - Al Swearengen. Easily one of my top five favorite shows and undoubtedly a top contender for all-time greatest western drama. More whiskey drinking, gun slinging, gambling, and saloon loitering than you can shake a gritty stick at. Extremely intelligent dialogue throughout, too. It's a crime that this show wasn't treated to a 4th season. Absolute gold.

  • Oz blew my damn mind. Not only does it feature one of the most uniquely informative and theatrically neat-o narrative devices; it's also the most balls to the wall intense prison drama I've come across. Lots of penis as well, if that's what you're into. Also, J. K. Simmons!

  • Band of Brothers makes Saving Private Ryan look like a basket of kittens in comparison. If you're into any sort of war or battlefield dramas, this is an absolute must see, and by extension so is The Pacific. I can't decide which I like better. Awe inspiring.

  • Firefly is a brief but legendary science fiction show, with some of the most memorable outer space moments since Star Wars. It's definitely not of the same quality as the aforementioned HBO and AMC productions, but nonetheless enjoyable and appreciable. Possibly the ultimate modern cult sci-fi drama. Damn good.

  • Battlestar Galactica is perhaps a more rewarding experience overall than Firefly, but personal mileage with that statement may vary. There's a lot more content to absorb in Battlestar, and its conceptually different than Firefly, the primary conflict being between man and machine on the most grandiose scale possible and under dire circumstances. Mind fuck.

  • Boardwalk Empire is taking up the mantle that Deadwood and The Sopranos helmed before it, and notably is created by an integral writer of The Sopranos, Terence Winter. Steve Buscemi dominates the lead role of Atlantic City treasurer Nucky Thompson, who is responsible for enabling black market liquor sales during the prohibition era. Compelling shit.

  • Bored to Death is more of a comedy than a drama, but it's a damn fine show nonetheless. Schwartzman is a novelist whose writer's block led him to start moonlighting as a private detective, alongside Galifianakis as a superhero cartoonist with low self-esteem and Ted Danson as an old stoner desperate to remain in youthful action. Bored to Death got a lot stronger with its second season, moving from slow-paced character building episodes to fast-paced, shenanigan-filled stories that bank off the already developed character personas. High LPMs.

EDIT: I saw people recommending shows that (in my opinion) aren't exactly on par with Breaking Bad, so I thought I'd chip in my two cents as to why you might want to avoid certain suggestions. To clarify, I'm not saying these shows are bad; I watch(ed) them regularly, and I've seen much worse. Some of these are even personal favorites.

Dramas, enjoyable yet significantly flawed:

  • Dexter started out strongly, likely due to the first season adhering to the book upon which the series was based. Seasons 2 and 3 are still good for the most part, but you can tell the writers were running out of ideas. Season 4 was awesome because it featured John Lithgow as Dexter's nemesis, and the finale seemed to hint at newfound freedom for Dexter to do what he does best. But alas, season 5 deals with Dexter playing babysitter while all the other characters in the show fuck and fight one another. Also, Deb. shudders

  • Dollhouse is Joss Whedon's post-Firefly creation, and it's unfortunate that he decided to work with subpar acting talent, because the premise and visual execution of the show are fantastic. To be fair, not all of the acting is bad; the blame wavers back and forth between cheesy writing and unbelievable acting, but the core principles and ideas pushed in Dollhouse make for some truly entertaining episodes, especially the unaired finale, which by itself made the short series worth watching. Pretty decent.

  • Hung let me down hard. For a long time I was on a strict HBO regimen, and everything I had watched prior was at least great. Hung is only somewhat all right; it's questionable even by basic cable network standards. It misses the mark on line-delivery time and again thanks to over- or under-acting by a majority of the cast, and there's no consistent feel or rhythm. It tries to be like Six Feet Under in terms of grounded family characters but then almost parodies itself in its approach to pimping. The absurd circumstances characters find themselves in will make you chuckle, but Hung is mostly a flop. Dumb drama.

  • Lost is in my top five favorites, but I can't deny that a large portion of the audience was alienated as each season progressed, culminating in a massive let down of a series finale for plenty of die-hard Lost fanatics. I personally love the direction the show took, and think the story and its conclusion are ahead of their time, and way above many viewers' heads. It was a mistake airing such a complex drama on a family-oriented network like ABC. Lost deserved the most mature, freedom-allowing palette for its delivery, but despite not getting that, the show was undeniably a smashing success during its initial run and featured more adult themes than your typical ABC fare. It also set a new standard for future serialized dramas by declaring an end date to the series 3 years before the final episode aired. Incredibly bold.

  • Californication is a decent comedy/drama that I personally didn't latch onto. I like Duchovny's slacker, womanizer character and his escapades pulled an occasional laugh from me, but I don't think the show has much substance relative to other dramas - a common flaw in Showtime productions. When it comes to premium networks, HBO understands that stories need to come from a place of solid character development better than most. Californication is an example of Showtime recognizing and attempting to employ that methodology, but overall the show lacks depth and believability for a program that often takes itself so seriously. I didn't find it as "insufferable" as some critics though, and I enjoyed a good handful of episodes. Fun times.

After that, ALL of californication ROCKS. Some of the other SHO shows are ok, but some are just over-rated. Dexter was amazing for a while, then continues to have "good" moments without any real payoff. Weeds is the same. 2 seasons then it blows.

[–]theoretic_lee 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I just watched season 6 of Weeds and rather enjoyed it. That show was slowly losing me but I really liked the latest season. I like Shane as a complete psycho and this season was all about the family, no real crazy twists and adding new characters every show like in the past couple seasons. I laughed a lot and I got to see Zach Morris bang the hell out of Nancy Botwin. If I can't be the one to do it, I have no problem with Preppy being the guy banging the hottest TV mom ever.

[–]stratosaurus 31 points32 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I love Dexter, but Breaking Bad has always been on a completely different level.

I think it's because Dexter has always adhered to a formula (to some extent) every single season and most seasons (save for season four) leave us with a feeling of "What now?".

Breaking Bad on the other hand feels like the writers have said "fuck it" to the formula and allow the seasons to develop much more naturally. None of the finales to Breaking Bad have hit quite as hard as most of the finales of Dexter, but I think that's an indication of how awesome every single episode of BB is.

I agree with most of this, while Season 3 is the worst of the series, its still good tv compared to other shows, just in the Dexter universe it was pretty terribad. I've seen most of the shows being mentioned but Six Feet Under is my favorite hands down. I've also watched all of Dexter so far and have grown to hate it. Half of it is shitty cop drama that is barely watchable if you've seen something great like The Wire.

Sorry but nothing tops Breaking Bad, sure there are a lot of other good shows out there but this is the only one where I have virtually no complaints at the end of every episode.

The cinematography, direction and acting are all top notch. Same goes with the editing, some really cool montages. What really sells this show above and beyond is it's fantastic writers. Every character feels like it develops naturally and falls into a gray area of good and bad qualities. We really feel connected to these characters and it is great to see the minor ones really start to be developed as well like Mike the Cleaner.

HBO is the only channel to consistently put out shows on the level of Breaking Bad. Rome, The Wire, Six Feet Under, Sopranos, Oz, Generation Kill, Band of Brothers, Boardwalk Empire. [–]samreich 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Breaking Bad is my number one show. Season Three is easily the best season of television in the past decade.

"Mad Men" is my number two. Beautiful production design and cinematography, fascinating characters, and smart (if sometimes a little plodding) story. I don't know a man who doesn't identify with Don Draper on some level.

"Battlestar Galactica" is my number three. It's creates as realistic of a world as Breaking Bad or Mad Men, but does it in space. It's sometimes called the "West Wing" of space for its political realism.

"The Wire" is my number four. There has never been such a compelling and patiently unravelling story on TV, maybe because its head writers were all novelists. You have to commit hard to it, though; there are some uneventful episodes.

"Six Feet Under" is my number five. The first season is the best. Alan Ball was most involved then, and it has the right combination of humor and tragedy. After that, the series takes a sharp turn for the tragic, but the last two seasons - especially the story around Lisa's disappearance - are amazing.

Happy watching!

MASH on DVD. You are given the option to watch every episode without the laugh track, which was added, in part, to appease the censors. Without the laugh track, you will see what the writers and actors originally intended: one of the funniest, most poignent, smartest, and most controversial shows ever aired on television.
