What is vocaloid?

Vocaloid is an audio technology/software developed by Yamaha Corporation that enables users to synthesize a/several singing voice(s) just by typing in lyrics along the instrumental track.

You can see a clear example by watching this video:

Vocaloid has generated a huge amount of non-commercial/commercial productions. Everyday new songs are added to NND and Youtube, a good starting point is our favorites playlist, since the most upvoted songs in this subreddit are added each week.

So isn't an anime?

No, each voice bank is represented by an anime styled character that usually fits its synthesized voice, the core of the vocaloid scene is the music produced with said software.

However there's a good amount of fandom (content) that uses this imagery: PV (Promotional videos), Dramas, doujinshis, short-animations, etc..

An exception to this practice are the VY1 and VY2 voice banks which weren't given an official character art and to an extent the English ones which for obvious reasons uses a more western style for its characters.

I like a song, how do I get the MP3?

I'm working on a video to show the best way (imho) to do this, in the mean time locate the NND code in the YT video description, ex: (sm15630734) or the complete url of the NND original, ex: (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm15630734), then paste any of them in the MP3 field located in NicoSound press the MP3 button, then after the next page loads click this link: MP3 を抽出, to start your DL.

If you get an error, most of the time is because the song is commercially distributed, in that case look on iTunes or the Amazon music store.

What is an UTAUloid?

UTAUloids are voice banks that work under the Vocal Synthesizer Tool UTAU, UTAU is a freeware attempt to make a voice synthesizing software just like Vocaloid.
